2. LECTURE

There wasn't an additional lecture.

3. PROCESS WORK
Apply the knowledge and experience you have gained from the exercises and assignments completed throughout the course to this project.

Option 1: Font Design for Problem Solving

Create a typeface that is intended to solve a larger problem or contribute to a solution within graphic design, animation, new media, entertainment design, or another related field (not necessarily limited to your own area of specialization).

Deliverables:

  • A completed TrueType font (.ttf)
  • Examples of the font's applications

Option 2: Expansion of an Existing Typeface

Research how an existing letterform or typeface is currently used in a field that interests you.

Through your research, you should:

  • Understand its current use.
  • Identify areas that can be improved.
  • Explore new applications or combinations that can enhance its value.

Based on your findings, develop and expand the chosen letterform or typeface.

Deliverables:

  • A completed TrueType font (.ttf)
  • Examples of the font's applications

Option 3: Experiment

Create an experimental typographic project.

To qualify as an experiment, your work must demonstrate both:

  • Novelty
  • Uniqueness

Possible examples include:

  • 3D typography
  • Digital extensions (e.g., AR)
  • Edible materials
  • Unconventional materials
  • Typography-based music videos
  • Fine art

Deliverables:
The deliverables will be determined by the student's own concept and project idea.

Idea Presentation

Selected Content: Completion of an Existing Font Design (Game Title Typeface)

In this project, I aim to complete the title font design of the game OMORI.

I will recreate and develop the font by designing all letters from A to Z in both uppercase and lowercase forms. In addition, I will create supporting elements such as punctuation marks and symbols.

Font Characteristics
Since the story of this game explores themes such as depression and trauma, the original font design does not use a clear and highly structured typeface. Instead, it has a slightly unstable and handwritten style, which reflects the emotional atmosphere and psychological themes of the game.

Idea and Digitization

(Fig 1.2 Font Design, Adobe Illustrator 06/21/2026)

(Fig 1.3 Font Design, Adobe Illustrator 06/21/2026)

Each uppercase and lowercase letter was created using Adobe Illustrator, while adjusting the size and shape to maintain consistency across the entire typeface.

The letters were designed carefully to ensure that the form, style, and overall atmosphere of both uppercase and lowercase characters were unified and visually consistent.

After creating the font design in Adobe Illustrator, I used FontForge to adjust the letter spacing, width, height, and other font settings.

The font was refined based on the following basic guidelines and measurements.

After completing the font creation, I will produce five types of artworks (font presentations) and five application examples showing how the font can be used in actual items or advertisements.

The color palette was created by using the overall colors and main color schemes from the game.

I developed and refined the designs by referring to the game's themes, atmosphere, and actual in-game screens.

For the merchandise and advertisement designs, I used Adobe Photoshop to adjust the colors and brightness, and then incorporated my own design elements into each application.

4. FEEDBACK

week12 :
General Feedback
Create the presentation to match the font.
Special Feedback
Align font widths and heights.

Week11:
General Feedback
continue with numerals and punctuation.
Special Feedback
I was told to make the capitalization consistent.

Week10:
General Feedback
・All lowercase characters are now complete.
Special Feedback
・After having the large text design reviewed, we received approval for the following lowercase font.

Week9 :
General Feedback
Complete the uppercase letters A–Z of the selected typeface by next week.
Specific Feedback
I narrowed the three design ideas down to one and was allowed to proceed with creating the uppercase letters.

5. REFLECTION

In this project, I applied the knowledge and skills gained from previous assignments and used various software tools to complete the final work.

The techniques and design principles learned throughout the course were also applied during the creation process.

For this project, I decided to complete a game title typeface. This was a challenging task because it required more observation, creativity, and attention to detail than previous assignments. However, it was also a valuable experience that helped me improve my design skills and understanding of typography.

I would like to continue applying the knowledge and techniques I have gained from this project in future works.

6. FURTHER READING

This site, I learned the overall process of font creation.

The process involves deciding on a concept, sketching the letters, vectorizing them in Adobe Illustrator, converting them into a font using FontForge, and applying the completed font to design works.

Through FontForge, I learned how to insert glyphs, adjust letter spacing and width, and save the final font file.

In this section, I learned about the size and design of punctuation marks.

Punctuation is an important element in completing a typeface, and this process provided valuable knowledge for font development.

It also allowed me to achieve things that I was previously unable to do and expand my understanding of typography design.
