Project 1 : Exercise 1 - Sound Dubbing

We downloaded a muted video clip from Everything Everywhere All at Once and a Word document containing the dialogues. Using our own recorded voices together with ambient sounds and sound effects found on websites, we edited and completed the video.

Materials Required
  • Recorded dialogue
  • Hard sound effects
  • Ambient sounds, background sounds, and sound effects

Individual Task

  • Record your own voice for the character dialogues.

Group Task

  • Find links to suitable sound effects and add them to the spreadsheet.

During Week 4, we edited Project 1 Exercise 1 (Sound Dubbing) in class. In this lesson, we learned how to modify the voice quality of recorded dialogue using audio effects.

Terminology

Dialogue

  • The spoken lines of the characters.

Ambience Sound

  • Environmental and background sounds that help create the atmosphere of a scene.

Hard Sound Effects

  • Sound effects synchronized with specific actions, such as footsteps, door sounds, or object impacts.

Semi Tones

  • A unit used to adjust the pitch of a sound.

Volume Settings

Dialogue

  • Between -6 dB and -12 dB

Ambience Sound

  • Below -20 dB

Hard Sound Effects

  • Adjust according to the requirements of the scene.

Effect Used

Pitch Shifter

Adobe Premiere Pro was used for the editing process. First, we imported the muted video and added the recorded dialogue, ambient sounds, and sound effects. The dialogue tracks were separated according to each character, and the voice quality was adjusted to create male and female character voices.

Editing Process

  1. In the Audio Effects panel, select Time and Pitch, then drag and drop Pitch Shifter onto the audio clip.
  2. Select the audio clip and open the Effect Controls panel. Under the Pitch Shifter settings, click Edit in the Custom Setup section.
  3. Adjust the Semitone value. Increasing the semitone value makes the voice higher, while decreasing it makes the voice lower.
  4. Continue adjusting the settings while listening to the recorded voice until the desired voice effect is achieved.

3. REFLECTIONS

Through this assignment, I learned the basic functions and workflows of Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. Although this was not my first time using Premiere Pro and After Effects, I had never properly studied how to use them before. Therefore, this learning experience helped me understand the fundamentals, as well as the differences between the two programs and how to adjust settings effectively.

Video editing and adjustment are not areas that I am personally confident in, so I initially felt unsure about this task. However, by learning how to adjust timing, cut clips, apply effects and filters, set positions, and edit audio, I discovered how much these techniques can change the impact and atmosphere of a video. Through this process, I was also able to develop new technical skills.

Since most of the operations were new experiences for me, this assignment became a valuable opportunity for learning and gaining practical experience.
