3. PROCESS WORK

Exercises 1: Mints
In this lesson, we also learned how to connect video clips and how to save the final project.

(Fig.1.1 Mints)

Exercises 2 : Doritos
In this task, we rearranged separated video clips in the correct order and completed them as a single video.

(Fig.1.2 Doritos)

Exercises 3 : Stalker

In this task, we worked in groups of three on a “stalker” theme.

Each member had a role:

  • Stalker
  • Victim
  • Cameraman

We used the shot sizes learned in class to film the scene. After filming, we edited the video by labeling each shot size with text and completed the final video.

Zach King:3 movies

1. “What really happens when you charge your phone…”

Reason for selection:
I chose this video because the world-building is very clear, and the character’s purpose and actions are easy to understand and follow.

Art Direction:
The video presents a miniature world where the character appears to move into a small-scale environment.

Character Design:
The character behaves like a repair worker who carries a large charger to charge a phone, with actions focused on “repairing” and “charging” the device.

Visual Effects:
Objects appear much larger due to the tiny scale of the character. Everyday items, such as a pencil used as a bridge, are shown in a way that emphasizes the character’s small size.

2. “Swipe to the best”

Reason for selection:
I chose this video because it uses the viewer’s finger as the main interaction to control and move elements in the video. It feels visually interactive and provides a fresh, experiential viewing experience.

Art Direction:
The viewer uses their finger to interact with objects in the video in sync with the music, creating an interactive experience.

Character Design:
The character performs everyday activities such as brushing teeth, changing clothes, and cleaning.

Visual Effects:
The video reacts to the viewer’s finger movements, making objects and characters move as if the viewer is directly controlling them, creating an immersive and interactive illusion.

3. “How Did He Escape This Prison Cell?”

Reason for selection:
I chose this video because it presents a clear storyline and character, and it is interesting to see how events are structured to develop the narrative.

Art Direction:
The story shows a character who is trapped in a prison cell and uses paint to escape.

Character Design:
The character is imprisoned and uses chalk to create paint and break through the wall. This highlights the character’s creativity and problem-solving ability.

Visual Effects:
Chalk drawings of paint buckets transform into real objects, and when paint is thrown on the wall, it turns into a hole. However, when a police officer touches the hole, it turns back into paint. Eventually, the character escapes. The use of visual illusions and composition makes the video highly engaging and visually striking.

By now you should have already watched:1. Lalin, 2. Everything, everywhere, all at once. Based on each of the movies,

LALIN

1.   Which part is act 1, act 2, act 3 respectively? Describe each act with ONE paragraph only.

ACT 1:
In Act 1, the main character, Lalin, is introduced. She is currently studying abroad in Japan and is active as an online influencer on social media. However, she was teased about her skin condition, such as acne, during high school. Because of those experiences, she hides her real face behind a mask and lives as if she were someone else.

ACT 2:
In Act 2, the story portrays Lalin’s feelings of emptiness and loneliness, even though she receives many likes and followers on social media. She wants people to accept her true self, but because of her painful past experiences, she is unable to fully express who she really is. Her anxiety and inner struggles are strongly emphasized.

ACT 3:
In Act 3, Lalin finally reveals the true self that she had been hiding for a long time. The story shows her gradually overcoming her anxiety and loneliness.

 2.   What is the inciting incident in the movie?

The inciting incident of the story is when Lalin was teased about her skin during high school, which made her feel unwanted and rejected by others.

3.   What is the midpoint scene in the movie?

The midpoint occurs when Lalin talks with someone who had a similar experience. Through this interaction, her feelings begin to change from hiding her true self and living in loneliness to wanting to connect with others and be understood.

4.   What is the Climax scene in the movie?

In the climax, Lalin chooses to reveal her true self to others instead of continuing to keep everything to herself and live in loneliness. Even though she knows she may still be hurt because of her appearance, she decides to connect with people honestly.

5. What is the theme of the movie?

The theme of this work is the importance of accepting one’s true self and the value of human connection with others.

Everything, Everywhere, ALL At Once

1.   Which part is act 1, act 2, act 3 respectively? Describe each act with ONE paragraph only.

ACT 1:
In Act 1, the main character, Evelyn, is struggling with problems in her family relationships, including her marriage, her relationship with her daughter, and her relationship with her father. She is also dealing with work-related issues such as running the laundromat business and tax problems. Suddenly, another version of her husband from a different universe appears, and she becomes involved in a multiverse war.

ACT 2:
In Act 2, Evelyn learns about the existence of the multiverse and Jobu Tupaki. She also discovers the many possibilities of who she could have been in different parallel universes.

ACT 3:

In Act 3, through her confrontation with Jobu Tupaki, Evelyn chooses not to reject or deny every world and possibility, but instead to accept them and respond with love and understanding. After the conflict ends, she rebuilds her relationship with her family and returns to a peaceful everyday life.

 2.   What is the inciting incident in the movie?

The inciting incident of the story occurs during a meeting at the tax office, when Waymond from another universe contacts Evelyn and tells her about the multiverse and the existence of Jobu Tupaki.

3.   What is the midpoint scene in the movie?

The turning point of the movie happens when Evelyn discovers that the enemy, Jobu Tupaki, is actually her daughter. Although she is overwhelmed by confusion and feelings of emptiness, she begins to understand the problems in her relationship with her daughter and the way she has treated her until now.

4.   What is the Climax scene in the movie?

In the climax, Evelyn chooses not to reject or deny everything. Even if nothing in the universe has meaning, she realizes that there is still meaning in loving and accepting others, and she embraces everything as it is.

5. What is the theme of the movie?

The theme of this work is self-understanding and the idea that even if life may seem meaningless, being together with others and the choices we make still have meaning.
