INSTRUCTIONS

Task description

For this assignment, I need to select one design from the three designs I created and provide a deeper analysis and explanation of that design.
This assignment requires an understanding of design principles as well as strong observation skills.

Final Selected Design

Fig.1

 Process
1. Sketch
Here, I explored the theme of “Favorite Fruit.” Since I like oranges, I created a composition that draws attention with the orange as the main focus. By placing it at the center, it becomes easier to attract the viewer’s eye and clearly communicate what is meant to stand out. (49 words)

2. Draft
The artwork sketched by hand is redrawn digitally. At this stage, the composition is refined while considering the color scheme and spatial arrangement. (23 words)

3. Enhancing Quality
Next, I added texture to the single-color subject. Since I wanted the orange to stand out, I focused on enhancing the texture of the orange alone. By using warm colors and adding light, I was able to create a sense of glossiness and three-dimensionality. (44 words)

4. Balancing
Also, to ensure it is clearly recognized as an orange, I added orange flowers around the leaves and fruit—bright enough to be noticed but not too overpowering. This expanded the visual interest and made the composition feel more like an orange. By adding white tones similar to the highlights, the overall color balance was also improved. (56 words)

5. Text and Words
Finally, I made the last adjustments to the colors, positioned the text, and refined the font design. At first, I considered using only English, but since I often eat oranges in Japan and they strongly give a sweet and delicious impression, I decided to include both Japanese and English text. The font is thin and colored the same orange as the fruit, which helps draw attention to the central illustration while also guiding the viewer’s eye across the whole composition. (80 words)

Rationale:

Decision Making
When creating this design, I focused on how to make it as clear, visible, and easy to understand as possible. Based on this, I chose the composition, color scheme, and forms.

Meaning / Purpose
The meaning of this work is based on things I personally like; however, it also expresses that the things I like are always present in my daily life and are what support me.

Principles Used:

  • Contrast
  • Proximity (Gestalt Theory)
  • Closure (Gestalt Theory)
  • Word and Image

Contrast
In this artwork, orange is used as the main contrasting element. By surrounding it with green, the central orange stands out more clearly.

Proximity (Gestalt Theory)
The overall composition is green, with the orange fruit placed within it, making it easy to recognize that the orange is growing on a tree. The same applies to the scattered flowers around it, which appear to belong to the leaves and fruit.

Closure (Gestalt Theory)
The full shape of the orange is partially hidden by the leaves. However, from the surrounding leaves, the spherical texture, and the flowers and text, viewers can still perceive that the central object is an orange fruit.

Word and Image
As a feature of this work, the font design and color scheme match the mood of the illustration. By using the same orange color for both the subject and the text, the composition feels balanced and reinforces the idea that the words are describing the orange. Additionally, the phrase “sweet orange” suggests a ripe and delicious fruit. (250 words)

Feedback:

week7:
For Task 3, it is important to clearly explain the process of the selected work. Adding lighting and shadow effects is not recommended, as it may make the artwork too complex.

Reflection

In Task 3, I selected one design from the three created in Task 2 and explained its composition and development process. It is also necessary to describe which principles were used and where they are applied in the artwork.

In the selected work for Task 3, I applied the principles of Contrast, Proximity, Closure, and Word and Image. The process involved starting with an analog sketch, then redrawing it digitally, followed by careful editing, adjustments, and refinements to complete the final piece.

Based on the reference work used in Task 2, I incorporated similar elements while adjusting the overall color scheme and balance. Through this process, I was able to create a design that is clearer and closer to my ideal outcome.(122 words)
