Theme: Designing Urban Futures

This assignment is conducted as a group project.
Our theme (Group 5) : Cycling Infrastructure.

First, we researched cycling facilities in Malaysia, including existing infrastructure, current problems, possible solutions, and residents’ opinions.
As a result of our research, it became clear that there are various perspectives regarding improvements and solutions from different stakeholders.

Next, we discussed and shared ideas within the group to solve these problems (focusing specifically on the Subang Jaya area).

200-word write up

Collectively, Designing Urban Futures explores how we can improve mobility, sustainability, and human-centered ways of living in our cities. For the context of urban mobility, to us this theme should focus on how people can move around the city and how existing transportation systems can support the communities. For our group project we are mainly focusing on how we improve the use of bicycles in Subang Jaya. This is due to Subang Jaya being largely car dependent, leading to traffic congestion as well as environmental concerns. Our project focuses on increasing the ability to access bicycles.

Through research, we found several barriers to cycling in Subang Jaya were identified including accessibility issues, weather-related concerns, and lack of infrastructure. Some of our ideas were to include a public rental service with multiple access methods such as QR codes drawing inspiration from bike-sharing services in cities like London. We were also thinking of developing a cycling navigation app to guide users through safer and more cycle friendly routes. In this proposal we are going to explore more ideas that will help improve mobility in Subang Jaya.

We hope together, these ideas envision a future Subang Jaya where cycling is safe, accessible to everyone, and implemented into everyday life. (206 words)

Sketches
Below are sketches of the bicycle lane ideas that were actually developed. They take into consideration ventilation, traffic conditions, depth, and width, and further develop the ideas by detailing the materials and internal structure.

Feedback:

  1. Strengthen the weaker aspects of the ideas and improve the missing parts (including more detailed planning and solutions).

Reflection:

At first, we each came up with ideas individually (through researching websites and articles), then decided on roles and created the presentation. We thought carefully about how to organize and present the content, aiming to make it as clear and easy to understand as possible.
