Typography: Letters / Understanding letterforms

Each bracket connecting the serif and the stem has a different curve.
When you compare how the stems end and how the bowls connect to the stems, you can see a clear difference in the character of the two letters.

3. PROCESS WORK

Task 2_Text format
<Text format/ Layout>
・Prototype Design

Fig 2.1

I adjusted the design so the letters would not be flipped like a mirror, and I also refined the positioning and size of the letters to improve balance and create a more unified look.

Fig 2.2

For the cover on the left, I enlarged the background and lowered its opacity so that the viewer's eye is drawn to the whole design, and I added the title to make it clear and easy to read.

For the main content pages, I arranged the elements in a balanced and easy-to-read layout.

4. FEEDBACK

Week 6
Make changes and revisions to Task 2.

Feedback:
I received approval for Task 2 after making minor design adjustments.

Week7

About Task2

Feedback:

Since I received approval for both Task 1 and Task 2, I uploaded the work I created for them to my e-portfolio.

Week8

Confirmation of Task 2 and explanation of Task 3

Feedback:

First, we were instructed to create a design in Adobe Illustrator based on the letters we chose, and then draw the letters on A4 graph paper using a marker pen with a thickness of 3.0 or more.

REFLECTION
In this assignment, I learned how the spacing and balance between letters affect readability and what draws the viewer’s attention. By creating a design and layout that are easy to understand even from a distance, I was able to learn better typography.

However, I was not familiar with using Adobe InDesign, so I often struggled with settings and fine adjustments. Not only the layout design, but also aligning to the baseline, adjusting font sizes, and modifying text boxes were all new challenges for me, which made the process very difficult.

However, as I continued working, I gradually became able to achieve layouts and designs that were closer to what I wanted.

FURTHER READING

This content covers the basic principles of typography as well as its application in digital production.

A key point is that the information being conveyed should be immediately understandable to the reader. The text also discusses paragraph styles and character styles. By managing the formatting of entire paragraphs and adjusting individual words or phrases, one can achieve a consistent visual presentation and improve workflow efficiency.

Moreover, it is emphasized that such adjustments should be guided by purpose-driven judgment, focusing on what is most appropriate for the specific communication goal.
